DIY - Crochet Twist Wig

I've wanted to have a braids wig for some time now and making my own seemed like the best option. Then came the wahala of getting a good wig cap. Y'all know the normal wig cap is too light/weak/soft and can't take the weight of braids or twists. Another cap known as dome cap is usually used. It comes in a pack that says Dome cap. I went searching for this cap in the market here in Akure and couldn't find it.

I was now left with option B. Option B was using that net cap we used back in the day and still use (satin cap or scarf is better for your hair though). Using this cap meant I would first crochet the extension to the cap before braiding or twisting. I went with twisting.

I used two packs of Expression Rich Braids (the big pack). I had a little left though. Guys, I have to tell you it's a lot of work. The cap has a lot of holes and I tried to make sure no hole was visible. I think I succeeded. The thread used in knitting the cap however, was another thing. A few couldn't help peeking through the twists. But it's okay because it's the same colour as my hair underneath and the extension on top it's barely noticeable. The wig is really full too.


I made it fuller in front so I  could part it without holes. To know where to part I tacked a little white thread to the band at the point I wanted the part.


Even though I've been enjoying my wig so far, you'd get better results if you used a dome cap. I hope to get my hands on some of these soon.

Hair Files - How to Make Your Own Length-check T-shirt

For the longest time i wanted to have a length-check t-shirt. I hadn't gotten round to getting one when Dabs of Naija Hair Can Grow started taking entries for her 'six inches in one year challenge', which I wanted to be a part of. One of her criteria was that you had to send a 'before' picture with a length-check T-shirt. Deadline for submission was close, did not know how I was going to get one where I live. So I decided to improvise. You know how they say necessity is the mother of invention....

I dug out one white T-shirt I had used during NYSC. I know, I really need to dispose of some cluster, sigh. Anyways, I got a marker, ruler and a measuring tape and got to work. I first marked the inches as dots at the back of the T-shirt. One dot on the left, another on the right, then I joined them using a ruler(makeshift). Then I numbered it. I continued till I got to the hem of the T-shirt.

I wish I had pictures to show every step but lost the ones I took. Below are pictures of me using the T-shirt in my last length-check.

This is actually the second length check T-shirt I made. First one didn't quite work out. It hugged my body, so I couldn't see the numbers at my lower back. I had to use a bigger one. After all the trouble sef I couldn't gather liver to send my entry :-). At least, I have a length-check T-shirt.

Hair Files- Flat Twist Outs

Heys guys, how you been? So a few weeks ago, I decided to try out a flat twist out. I'd washed my hair and put it in flexi-rods and a few plastic rollers, which I let stay on overnight.

By the time I took out the rods and rollers the next afternoon, the parts of my hair where I used flexi-rods were still not dry and had no curls :(. I got opposite results where I used rollers though.

Anyways, after plenty brainstorming, I decided to do a flat twists in front and jumbo normal twists behind. I wore my hair like this for a few days before unraveling to give me a half twist-outs/flat twist-out style.

What do ya think? Was it a hit or a miss?

How You Doing Guys?

Hey guys, been a while huh? First, let me say a very happy new year to you. How I have missed you guys. Trust me, I am not AWOL by choice. Anyways, I'm so glad we can catch up. So what's been up with you? Anything exciting? Me? Not so much, but
I did get married and relocated to another city :-D.

My dears, it's not been easy o. Especially since I'm back on the favour market. Things we do for marriage. I gotta tell you though, marriage is amazing. But it's also real life, so do the math.

Asoebi for Sale

I know, I know. It’s been ages, and I have missed you too. Like crazy! Pele, sorry, ema bi nu, ndo……..I am ashamed of myself. What kind of blogger am I sef? Anyways, I’ve missed blogging and I’m glad to be back. I pray I don’t go AWOL again J.

Hmmm, I have plenty to share with you guys o. Plenty things I want to talk about. So, I am planning a wedding. Yep, I am getting married. Wedding planning nor be joke o. That aside, the first thing I want to talk about is Asoebi. Some people would tell you your wedding planning is not complete without Asoebi. Well, I think Asoebi is nice. It adds colour to an occasion. However, I did not intend to have it for my wedding o, but friends and family managed to convince me otherwise. Now I have gone and bought fabric for a select few. The others would have to go with the colour code.

Why did I not consider it initially? It is stressful. You have to go shop for fabric, look for people to buy, ‘drag’ money …...I don’t have that kind of energy biko.  Also, money that could have been used to do something else is tied up. Sometimes, until after the wedding…….or forever. Some people may never pay up.

However, I just found out something else about Asoebi. It is actually a way to raise money. Imagine my shock when I found out how much gain someone made from selling Asoebi. Some people actually rip their friends and family off in the name of selling Asoebi. Not cool. I wonder how many ‘Asoebi wearers’ know this. I was talking with another person and he said most ‘Asoebi wearers’ are aware, and that they see it as their  contribution to the wedding. This is why some of them don’t bother to get a gift.

Personally, I feel some kind of way about someone inviting me to their wedding and ripping me off o. I know some people give out the Asoebi for free though. But most times you can’t use them after one wash. Same goes for some that did not even come free of charge.

It's Just Life

I think people should get off their high moral grounds. I think I should get off mine. It's easy to be angry at someone for doing something you do without thinking twice. The more I see of humans, the more hypocritical I find us to be. It's really easy to point the accusing finger at others. And you know what they say, four fingers point back at you.

I have learned not to expect so much from people. I've had all kinds of people let me down. Parents, friends, siblings etc. So I learned that lesson. I also do not take myself too seriously. So I rarely get mad at or hurt by people. They are human beings afterall. Sometimes I think of human beings as the basest of all animals. Animals do some terrible things like...eat their young, but it's because they don't know better. Humans on the other hand? Even the Bible said the heart of man is desperately wicked.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I do not take life and all it's trappings seriously. It's what life itself taught me. For instance, this is the reason I can wear my hair natural amid scorn from ignorant folks. It's the reason I can leave my house to work without any makeup. It's the reason I don't "break my head" when friends do not act like friends. It's the reason I don't cry when my father or mother throws hurtful words at me. It's the reason I can say hi to someone who called me names the previous week. It's the reason I can't be sad that I do not have my dream job yet. It's the reason I could never be jealous of another person! The list goes on....and finally, it's the reason I cannot contemplate suicide despite life's challenges.

 I leave you with the words of a wise young woman(yours truly) :-) "It's just life folks, it's not that serious". Let me add that eternity;where we spend it, is much more serious. Selah.
